When did you start playing guitar?
I was 13 years old, in 7th grade and my mom and dad got me a cheap electric guitar. I was interested in music my entire life and always wanted to learn guitar. At first, I broke some strings and didn’t want to pick up the guitar back up for a while because I was so intimidated.
Who are your favorite artists now?
I really enjoy Peter Gabriel, Seven Dust, Ellie Goulding, John Mayer, and some singer-songwriters like Sarah Mclachlan, and Sara Bareilles.
What do you do besides teach at Music Junkie?
I’m the band leader/lead guitar player/backing vocals for a Country Rock Americana band called Gary Kyle and The Kin, which I often travel around Texas and Oklahoma with, and I play in studio recording sessions.
How often do you think a student should practice?
I’ve always said a student should practice as often as they feel motivated, making sure to try and touch the instrument every day.
What’s your favorite part about teaching?
I’ve learned that working and interacting positively with students, especially children, while sharing my own knowledge is incredibly fulfilling for me.
