Music for Littles

music for littles

Our Music for Littles program is designed to introduce toddlers and preschoolers to the magical world of music through play-based activities and engaging lessons.

Led by our enthusiastic and experienced instructor, Maria, each session is crafted to nurture your child’s love for music while developing essential skills like language acquisition, motor skills, and creativity. We believe that every child deserves access to high-quality music education, and our program is the perfect way to start their musical journey.

“If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart.”
Shinichi Suzuki

Why Music for Littles?

Music for Littles Instructors know that toddlers and preschoolers love to dance and move to music! The magical key to toddler music time is repetition, which encourages language and memorization. Even very young children can reproduce simple rhythms by clapping or tapping objects! Preschoolers enjoy singing just to be singing. They aren’t self-conscious about their ability and most are eager to let their voices roar. They like songs that repeat words and melodies, use rhythms with a definite beat, and ask them to do things. Preschool children enjoy nursery rhymes and songs about familiar things like toys, animals, play activities, and people. They also like finger plays and nonsense rhymes with or without musical accompaniment.

“The fact that children can make beautiful music is less significant than the fact that music can make beautiful children.”
Cheryl Lavender

Program Structure

Each Music for Littles session is a dedicated one-on-one music time with an instructor, lasting 30 minutes. Our instructors break the time down into several short, play-based activities that teach valuable musical concepts. These concepts and activities grow in complexity as your child grows, ensuring that they are always engaged and challenged.

Core Musical Concepts Covered

  • Welcome Song or Activity: A fun and welcoming start to each session.
  • High / Low: Explore pitch differences through fun vocal activities.
  • Long / Short: Learn about note lengths using simple, engaging exercises.
  • Fast / Slow: Understand tempo with playful games and activities.
  • Loud / Soft: Explore dynamics and volume through interactive play.
  • Basic Rhythm Notation: Introduction to simple rhythmic patterns.
  • Beginner Melodies: Sing and play simple melodies to build musical confidence.
  • Intro to Instruments: Explore different instruments to broaden musical understanding.
  • Memorization: Strengthen memory skills through repetition and fun exercises.

“There is music in every child. The teacher’s job is to find it and nurture it.”
Frances Clark

Benefits of Early Music Education

We believe that music is a critical part of a well-rounded education. It is essential for students’ social and emotional well-being and serves as a powerful tool for teaching important life skills such as cooperation, grit, compromise, creativity, and more.

Here’s how our Music for Littles program benefits your child

Accelerated Brain Development: A 2016 study at the University of Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute found that musical experiences in childhood can accelerate brain development, particularly in areas related to language acquisition and reading skills.

Improved Academic Skills: According to the NAMM Foundation, learning to play an instrument can improve mathematical learning and even increase SAT scores.

Social-Emotional Development: Music ignites all areas of child development, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It helps the body and the mind work together.

Enhanced Memory Skills: Exposing children to music during early development helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words. Dancing to music helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self-expression.

Development of Executive Functions: High-quality music education has been linked with the development of self-control, planning, and verbal intelligence—the life skills students need to make decisions, focus, plan, problem-solve, and juggle multiple tasks. It also fosters a motivation to learn music.

“Music has a power of forming the character, and should therefore be introduced into the education of the young.”
Aristotle

Daniella Wiedel
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Music for Littles is the perfect fit for our little 2- almost 3-year-old! Miss Maria is enthusiastic, supportive, and kind. We highly recommend and plan to continue taking Ana to her 1:1 lessons for a long time. Our favorite part is that she sings along to her favorites at home and even makes up her own songs. Oh, and they are incredibly flexible in offering makeup lessons if schedules don’t allow you to go every week.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Miss Maria is our piano teacher! She has been so patient with my 6-year-old. She has a wide variety to teach during the lesson, and I am so pleased with how much my daughter has learned.”

What Do Parents Do?

Simply put, you get to relax! Parents are always welcome in the lessons, although we have found that often times it helps the kids to know where to focus if the parent leaves the room, as a young child’s natural tendency is to look to mom or dad first for engagement and reassurance.

Alternative Ways to Observe:

  • Observation Windows: All lesson rooms have windows on the door that you’re welcome to view through.
  • Video: We can set parents up to observe via video from the lobby area, allowing you to see and hear, without being physically present in the room.
