When people think about learning an instrument, they usually picture two big goals:
- Step 1: Play the right notes.
- Step 2: Play them at the right time.
And yes — those things matter! But here’s a secret we believe in deeply at Music Junkie Studios:
👉 Playing the “right” notes isn’t what makes music come alive.
👉 Expression is.
Musicality — that magic that makes music feel powerful, emotional, and real — goes way beyond technical accuracy.
And here’s the best part: You don’t have to be advanced to start playing with feeling.
Even beginners can develop musical expression from day one. Let’s break it down.
🎶 What Playing with Feeling Really Means
When we talk about “playing with feeling,” we mean connecting emotionally to the music you’re making — and letting that connection come through in how you play or sing.
It’s not just about what notes you play — it’s about:
- How you play them
- How you shape the sound
- How you use dynamics, tempo, and phrasing to tell a story
It’s about expressing something real — even if it’s just a simple song with three notes.
When students connect with the energy of what they’re playing — joy, sadness, excitement, calm — the music stops being mechanical and starts feeling human.
🧠 Myth: “Feeling” Comes After You’re Good at Playing
A lot of students (and even some teachers) treat musical expression like a bonus feature you unlock later — after you’ve mastered the notes and rhythms.
But waiting until everything is “perfect” before you play with feeling actually builds bad habits:
- Tight, tense playing
- Over-focus on technical achievement
- Disconnection from the music itself
At Music Junkie Studios, we flip that script.
We teach musicality from the very beginning. Even if you’re playing a simple melody with just a few notes, you can:
- Play it softer or louder depending on the mood
- Shape a phrase to build tension and release
- Experiment with timing to make it breathe
Feeling isn’t something you earn.
It’s something you build alongside your skills.

🎹 How Beginners Can Start Playing with More Expression
You don’t need fancy pieces to start making music that feels alive.
Here are simple, real techniques we use at MJS (and you can try too!):
🎵 Dynamics:
Play some parts louder, some parts softer. Even simple volume changes can add huge emotion.
🎵 Phrasing:
Think of a musical line like a spoken sentence.
Where would you naturally “breathe” or “pause”? Play with that.
🎵 Tempo Flexibility:
Not everything has to be perfectly steady!
Slightly speeding up or slowing down for emotional moments can add life.
🎵 Touch and Tone:
On piano, is it a light and bouncy touch?
On guitar, is it a smooth strum or a sharp pluck?
Different textures create different feelings.
🎵 Body Language:
Move a little with your playing. Feel the rhythm in your body, not just your fingers.
🎵 Emotion Check-In:
Before you start, ask: What do I want this song to feel like? Happy? Dreamy? Energetic?
Let that guide your choices, even in small ways.
🎵 The Three Dials:
As brilliant vocal coach Wendy Parr teaches, every performance is a balance of three things: energy, emotion, and intention.
If something feels flat or disconnected, you don’t have to throw it all out — you just adjust the dials:
- Energy: Does the song need more lift, or a softer, calmer delivery?
- Emotion: Are you tuned into the feeling you’re trying to share?
- Intention: Are you clear about the story you’re telling, even if there are no lyrics?
🎵 Focus on Story, Not Self-Consciousness:
As Wendy Parr beautifully puts it:
“As an artist, your job is to move the audience, let them in, share your emotional self authentically to take them on a ride.
It’s not ‘How do I look?’ or ‘What do they think of me?’ or ‘Am I doing this right?’ — that’s how you lose your joy and feel stress.
The joy of being an artist is focusing on who you are, sharing your story in a specific way you want to — being artistic, authentic, and creative.”
When you keep your focus on moving the audience, you naturally let go of perfectionism—and invite joy and creativity to take the lead instead.

🌱 Expression Grows with You
Just like technical skills, your ability to express yourself musically will grow over time.
It’s a muscle you strengthen by using it — even imperfectly.
At Music Junkie Studios, we encourage students to:
- Take creative risks
- Try different interpretations
- Make musical choices that reflect who they are, not just what’s “correct”
And guess what?
That’s what real musicians do.
Whether you’re playing “Twinkle, Twinkle” or a Beethoven sonata, your ability to connect emotionally is what makes your music unforgettable.
Need a real-world example?
Look at Jack Black.
He’s not famous because he sings everything perfectly.
He’s famous because he throws his whole heart into every performance—whether he’s rocking out with Tenacious D, making up a goofy song, or belting out a simple melody at full power.
He’s all in on the emotion, the energy, and the fun—and people can’t help but love it.
You don’t have to have a complicated song to move an audience.
You just have to mean it.
🎸 “You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to mean it.”
🎶 And that’s exactly what we encourage every student to discover at Music Junkie Studios.

💬 The Real Secret?
Expression doesn’t come after skill.
Expression builds skill.
When you play with feeling — even when you’re still figuring things out — you stay connected to the why behind music-making.
You stay curious.
You stay creative.
You stay inspired.
And when students stay inspired, they stick with it.
They grow.
They fall in love with music for life.
🎶 And that’s exactly the journey we’re here to support at Music Junkie Studios.
